On the heels of the announcement that Legally Blonde would be closing on Oct. 19, I have decided to review this show.
If you’re familiar with the movie, skip to the next paragraph. If not, then read on. The show is about this sorority girl named Elle who thinks she’ll be engaged to her true love, Emmett, but is instead dumped for someone “more serious”. Heartbroken, Elle decides to follow her ex into Harvard Law and prove to him that she’s still the perfect person for him. Along the way, she realizes that it’s more important to be herself.
What caught me off-guard was the opening number “Omigod You Guys”. Yes, that is the title of the opening number. I couldn’t help but giggle throughout the number. It perfectly sets up the whole show, but I think it’s hard to take a Broadway show seriously if that’s the first number. I think of all the numbers, this sticks with you for a long time, especially once you hear the title.

I had seen this show with Laura Bell Bundy in the part of Elle. I thought she was perfect for the part, she exuded the right amount of ditziness but was never campy. I really liked how they presented Elle’s application essay, which is basically a musical performance. The other characters were good, even though they seemed like borderline stock characters. I was very excited to see Bruiser, Elle’s dog, onstage. I thought that they were going to use a fake stuffed dog. You kind of wish you could see the show more often to see if the dog might go to the bathroom onstage. But that’s just me.Â
I thought this show was thoroughly entertaining. I only wish that there hadn’t been so much pink. I understand that the color is Elle’s favorite, but I thought it was used a little too much.
This show is appropriate for teens and up. It may seem like you can bring kids to the show, but there’s a musical number that has suggestive moves that may not be appropriate for 10 year olds.
Running time: 2 hours 30 minutes w/one intermission
Palace Theatre 1564 Broadway (between 46th and 47th Streets) New York, NY 10036
Thank you much for that wonderful entry.
