I have no idea why anyone would see this play.  I mean, it’s not like there’s someone famous in it…

Broadway on Broadway

This year the event was hosted by Michael McKean, star of the Broadway show Superior Donuts, which is now in previews at the Music Box Theatre.  He reminded the audience of this fact numerous times, memorably, “as the show across the street from Wolverine and James Bond which is right next to Tony Soprano”.  Sadly, this may be the only way some people would remember Superior Donuts, A Steady Rain (Schoenfeld Theatre) and God of Carnage (Bernard Jacobs Theatre).

Some of the shows were performed in costume, most likely due to proximity (Billy Elliot, In the Heights), 3pm matinees (Jersey Boys, The Fantasticks), no matinees (Chicago) and being in rehearsals (Ragtime, White Christmas, Fela!).

The audience appreciated all the shows as they were announced, especially the popular ones like Jersey Boys, which featured a performance by the “Jersey Girls” who sang “Walk Like a Man”.  I had to say, it was a nice change, though I’m sure that there were people who wanted the guys instead.

There seemed to be less people in attendance than last year, most likely due to the US Open.  At the end, when the confetti fell, you could tell that it was just tossed off the roofs of the buildings because they came down in clumps.

I’m back!

After a long (yet much needed) break, I have returned to Broadway.  I’m looking forward to the new shows coming out and will be reviewing again soon.  Also, I will be introducing a new, hopefully regular, feature that will take a peek into past shows that I’ve seen before I started this blog.  It’s currently in the idea stage and I hope it’s as interesting as some of my entries.  So until my next entry, I ask of you “What’s the best/worst show you’ve seen on/off-Broadway?”.  All appropriate responses will be featured.

Tony Awards Predictions

Filed Under (Tonys) by broadway on 05-06-2009

Here’s who I think will/should win at the Tonys.  I don’t recommend using this as your ballot (if you’re involved in a pool) as I haven’t seen as many shows as I should and have some obvious bias towards/against certain nominees.

Tony Award Nominations

Filed Under (Tonys) by broadway on 01-05-2009

It should be obvious to anyone who’s a regular reader of this blog that I haven’t been to many of the new shows of the current season.  There are many reasons for that, so what may follow will most likely be the dullest entry thus far.
